The 82nd General Synod of the Bible Presbyterian Church will meet August 2-6, 2018 at the Bible Presbyterian Church of Lakeland, FL, where Pastor James S. Blizzard is the senior pastor.
Dr. John A. Battle, Jr., elected moderator of the 81st General Synod, has planned the theme around Matthew 4:4, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God.'” Here is Dr. Battle’s description of the theme:
These years our Synod has been celebrating the 500th anniversary of various events in the Reformation. For 2018 we will be celebrating 500 years of expository preaching. It was in December, 1518, that Ulrich Zwingli announced to his church in Zurich, Switzerland, that he would discontinue the traditional schedule of homilies for the official church year. Rather, he declared that he would systematically preach through the entire Gospel of Matthew, from the original Greek text.
According to church historian Merle d’Aubigne, this was the first time in seven hundred years that such systematic expository preaching of the Bible was practiced in Europe’s churches. And it was the beginning of the Swiss Reformation, which ran in parallel with Luther’s Reformation in Germany. The Word of God preached was the strong basis of the Reformation throughout Europe.
In honor of this first series of expository sermons in the Protestant Reformation, our Synod will feature expository sermons from the same book that Zwingli chose, the Gospel of Matthew. All the messages will have this biblical foundation, and will be grouped around themes for each day.
Please be in prayer for the planning of Synod.
