Question 102

What do we pray for in the second petition?

——————————

In the second petition (which is, Thy kingdom come) we pray, That Satan's kingdom may be destroyed;1 and that the kingdom of grace may be advanced, ourselves and others brought into it,2 and kept in it; and that the kingdom of glory may be hastened.3

——————————

  1. Psalm 68:1. Let God arise, let his enemies be scattered: let them also that hate him flee before him.

  2. 2 Thessalonians 3:1. Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you.
Psalm 51:18. Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: build thou the walls of Jerusalem.
Psalm 67:1-3. God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us; Selah. That thy way may be known upon earth, thy saving health among all nations. Let the people praise thee, O God; let all the people praise thee.
Romans 10:1. Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

  3. Revelation 22:20. He which testifieth these things saith, Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.
2 Peter 3:11-13. Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness, looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat? Nevertheless we, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness.
