Question 95

To whom is baptism to be administered?

——————————

Baptism is not to be administered to any that are out of the visible church, till they profess their faith in Christ, and obedience to him;1 but the infants of such as are members of the visible church, are to be baptized.2

——————————

  1. Acts 2:41. Then they that gladly received his word were baptized: and the same day there were added unto them about three thousand souls.

  2. Genesis 17:7, 10. And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee. . . This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.
Galatians 3:17, 18, 29. And this I say, that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect. For if the inheritance be of the law, it is no more of promise: but God gave it to Abraham by promise. . . And if ye be Christs, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.
Acts 2:38-39. Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. For the promise is unto you, and to your children, and to all that are afar off, even as many as the Lord our God shall call.
