Resolution 64:5 – Memorial Resolution William Thayer 1921-2000

June 22, 2000

William Thayer served for the past 18 years as an elder of the Bethany Bible Presbyterian Church of Glendale, California and prior to that he had served as a deacon at the Long Beach Bible Presbyterian Church. Mr. Thayer, a veteran of World War II, greeted visitors each week, and brought joy to all at Bethany. Before moving to Glendale, Bill Thayer worked for Hughes Aircraft in the Long Beach area.

Elder Thayer faithfully attended presbytery meetings, and was the example of a servant. His wife of nearly forty years, Lenore, was an invalid for the last ten years of her life. Mr. Thayer cared for her without assistance, and never grumbled at his task. With great pains, he would see that she got to church. Nearly a decade after her death, Elder Thayer brought to church Jean Marion Blackwood, who continues to work in the Junior Church at Bethany. Just one week before his death, Jean and he were united in marriage.

Bethany Church was shocked at his passing in May, 2000, especially in light of the fact that in less than a year the church had lost two elders and the senior pastor. We humbly bow to the providence of God, and thank Him for His grace in giving us William Thayer as an elder and spiritual leader of the flock for so many years.

For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.
(Philippians 1:21)

Adopted by the 64th General Synod of the Bible Presbyterian Church,
meeting in Cincinnati, OH August 3-8, 2000.
