RESOLUTION 77:02 Memorial for Elder Joseph DeWarren Pope

J. DeWarren Pope was born October 4, 1917, in Connellsville, Pennsylvania, a son of godly Christian parents. He became a banker at the Mellon Bank of Pittsburgh. During World War II, he served in the United States Army in Korea. While there, he became friends with another Christian soldier and they attended worship services together.

When he was discharged from the army he rejoined his wife, Dorothy and daughter, Cindy. They were affiliated with an Orthodox Presbyterian church, pastored by Rev. Cal Cummings until they moved to Florida. DeWarren and his family joined a Reformed Presbyterian church in Clearwater. He served in many capacities at this church. After being married 33 years, his wife, Dorothy, passed away from cancer. He was a banker at First Federal Savings and Loan Association of Tarpon Springs, Florida.

He later met and married Nancy H. Lechner. His children now included his daughter, five step-sons and one step-daughter.

De Warren was talented in playing the violin, playing in the Pittsburgh orchestra before moving to Florida and then in the Clearwater, Florida orchestra for 25 years.

In 2003, De Warren and Nancy joined Suncoast Bible Presbyterian Church of Palm Harbor, Florida, under the shepherding of the Rev. Morris McDonald. After becoming members of Suncoast Bible Presbyterian Church, De Warren found many ways to be of service around the church— painting, yard work, etc. Also included was playing his violin for every service. He had a servant’s heart.

In February, 2004, De Warren was installed as one of the church elders and became the clerk of session for Suncoast Bible Presbyterian Church.

De Warren’s faithfulness both in church attendance, presbytery and synod meetings were a tribute to his service for the Lord. His knowledge of Scripture was a blessing and encouragement to those around him. He was an excellent refinisher of furniture, and some of the furniture around the church are memorials of his patience and willingness to be of service.

De Warren faithfully attended the meetings of the 76th Synod of the Bible Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, Florida in August, 2012. The last day of Synod, he became ill and could not attend. He was hospitalized with pneumonia and was later released, with nursing care, to his earthly home in Dunedin, Florida. On August 25, 2012, while surrounded by family, the Lord called him to his heavenly home.
