Resolution 83:04: On the Canons of Dort
Whereas, this year is the 400th anniversary of the Synod of Dort which met 1618-1619 to formally respond to the errors of James Arminius and his followers; and
Whereas, that venerable body was an international synod seeking the counsel of God’s ministers not only from the Netherlands, but also various regions of Great Britain, Germany, Switzerland, France, and other European countries; and
Whereas, the doctrinal statements it contains are pertinent to Christians in all ages insofar as neither the sinful estate of mankind nor the sovereignty of our God in salvation has changed; and
Whereas, the Canons of Dort are a concise summary of the gift of salvation, addressing various doctrines such as faith, repentance, conversion, justification, sanctification, and glorification in a manner that is faithful to God’s Word; and
Whereas, the Synod of Dort occupies a significant place in the history of the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ; and
Whereas, our own confessional standards are the Westminster Standards and do not specifically include the Canons; now, therefore, be it
Resolved that the 83rd General Synod of the Bible Presbyterian Church, meeting in Tacoma, Washington, August 1-5, 2019, gives thanks for and recognizes this individual contribution to the reformed churches of the world and encourages our churches everywhere to study and proclaim the unspeakable comfort of the Cannons of Dort.
