Question 21

Who is the Redeemer of God's elect?

——————————

The only Redeemer of God's elect, is the Lord Jesus Christ,1 who, being the eternal Son of God, became man,2 and so was, and continueth to be, God and man in two distinct natures, and one person, for ever.3

——————————

  1. 1 Timothy 2:5. For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus.

  2. John 1:1, 14. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God . . . And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.
John 10:30. I and my Father are one.
Philippians 2:6. Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God.
Galatians 4:4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God sent forth his Son, made of a woman, made under the law.

  3. See texts just cited; also Philippians 2:5-11. Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: but made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: and being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
