Resolution 82:03: Memorial for Byonghun Song

Wherefore we labour, that, whether present or absent, we may be accepted of him. – II Corinthians 5:6-9

Born October 20, 1970, in South Korea, Byonghun Song was prayed for as a covenant child that one day he would give his life to Jesus as His Saviour and then in Christian service. The prayers of his godly parents were honored. Twenty years later he entered Chong-shin, graduating from the University and Seminary in 2002. During his time as a student he gained practical experience with three different churches in Seoul, serving part-time on their educational staff. Following his assigned labors with three other churches as an Associate Pastor, he and his family came to the USA for further studies at Liberty University Divinity School. He was called by the Hyoshin Presbyterian Church in New York City to pastor in the USA with one of their church plants in Greensboro, North Carolina in 2011.

The Greensboro church began in Rev. Song’s home, and by November of that year, they had 16 members. That same year he launched a 5:30AM prayer service in their new rented facility. The following year saw a Friday prayer time established along with a worship service for children to complement the adult worship.

In 2013, Rev. Song, at the recommendation of the New York pastor, contacted the South Atlantic Presbytery of the Bible Presbyterian Church, requesting membership for him and his congregation. The following year, Pastor Song and his church were received, and they hosted the Presbytery. However, it was at this meeting that Rev. Song requested prayer for his bone cancer. In the fall of 2017 Rev. Song’s cancer spread to his liver and his bones to the point where further treatment was not recommended. He and his family felt it was best to return to Korea. He was called home to be with his Lord on March 16, 2018. He is survived by his faithful wife Kyongeun Pi and two gifted daughters, Yaewoon and Sungwoon Song.

He was a gifted pastor, loving husband, and proud father – and will be missed by many. These all stand comforted in the fact that our brother is with Christ and that we will see him again one day.

Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord: (For we walk by faith, not by sight:) We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord.
